Re-Test Key Points
Ch. 2 Lesson 1
Americans share many different cultures
People live many different ways of life = culture
Showing our love for our country is patriotism
Examples of how we show our love for our country = Pledge of Allegiance, celebrate 4th of July, monuments
The motto for the US is E Pluribus Unum = Out of Many, One
We come from many different cultures, but are UNITED as Americans
Native Americans were the first settlers in America
European settlers arrived later than the Native Americans in the 1400's
After the US became a country the population started to increase
People from other countries would immigrate to the US to start a new life
In the 1800's most Americans lived in rural (farm) areas
By the 1920's more Americans lived in urban (city) areas
In the 1950's most people moved to suburbs (towns) near a larger city
50 years ago Americans lived in the NE and Central parts of the US, NOW three-fifths of Americans live in the southern and western parts for warmer weather

October 14th- Social Studies Notes
Government is a system of leaders that makes laws
The Constitution was a plan of government with our nation's highest laws
The US is a republic meaning we get out power from the people and we choose our own leaders = democracy
We have 3 branches of government
Legislative branch --> make laws --> Congress = Senate and House of Representatives ** each state has 2 senators
Executive branch --> carry out the laws --> President
Judicial branch --> makes sure the laws follow the Constitution --> Supreme Court **9 judges
Checks and balances makes sure that one branch doesn't have more POWER than the other
The person or idea that gets the most votes is majority rule
We choose our own leaders by voting when we are 18 or older = important right
The Bill of Rights is part of the Constitution --> lists Americans rights and freedoms such as : speech, press, religion, assembly, trial by a jury, right to petition the government

Ch. 2 Lesson 3
The economy is the producing, selling, buying, and trading of products and services
The US uses a free market economy which means there is little government control, but they set limits for dangerous products
Businesses and companies use factors of production --> Natural resources (trees, water, land) --> Capital resources (money, buildings, and equipment) --> Human resources (workers)
The goal of a business is to make a PROFIT = the money left over after paying the bills
Supply = amount of product or service
Demand= people want it
The US has a diverse economy
In the past agriculture (farming) was the main economic activity, then manufacturing (making of products) took over as cities grew, and now the service industries (provide help) make up the largest part of our economy
The global economy is the world market in where people and businesses from other countries buy and sell products and services
